Bluegrass Junction

wheaty mediumBluegrass Junction, South Australia's premier bluegrass band, developed from several lifetime's obsession for old-fashioned, hard-core, three-chord, high-lonesome bluegrass. They have a huge repertoire of bluegrass classics - Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs, The Stanley Brothers, Jimmy Martin, Doyle Lawson, JD Crowe, Jim & Jesse. They don't do alternative, roots, Americana, faux, or pop-grass. And they make no compromises and no apologies for their ‘old school’ approach.
The band consists of ‘South Australian bluegrass royalty’, Trev Warner, Nick Cawthorne, the Bridgland brothers, Geoff and John, while Stephen Loss is a recent addition. Bluegrass Junction was originally formed in 1997. However, the band members go back much earlier.
Trev, Nick, Geoff and John have played bluegrass in various Adelaide configurations for over 30 years. The result is an almost intuitive understanding of each other's approach to playing and singing, and a song list ‘longer than your arm’. The songs are not highly choreographed, but often develop spontaneously.
Trev is an original Adelaide bluegrass and country music pioneer. He's a Hall of Fame inductee and three times Australian bluegrass banjo champion at the Tamworth Country Music Awards. He also has two Golden Guitar Awards for best instrumental. While Trev started out on guitar and banjo, he is widely recognised as one of the best bluegrass fiddle players in the country. And in true bluegrass style, he’s pretty handy on dobro and mandolin too!
Nick is one of Australia's finest and most experienced guitarists and singers. He’s been playing bluegrass since he was a teenager and drives a vintage guitar which is a ‘cannon’ made by his close friend, the late Brian Degruchy. Nick’s guitar is rock solid, laying a firm foundation for the band.
Geoff and John have also been playing bluegrass with passion since the 1960s. Geoff is an outstanding proponent of Scruggs-style banjo and John has spent decades studying the Monroe mandolin approach and repertoire in much detail. Geoff is also a skilful fiddler, and he and Trev have a long list of twin-fiddle tunes, which the band often insert into their sets.
Stephen Loss joined the band in 2016, filling in the bottom end with his driving bass. And, he's a great guitar and mandolin player too. While Stephen is a more recent convert to bluegrass (only 15 years!), he is just as passionate as the rest of the band.
All five members of the band are capable lead singers, but when they combine two, three or four parts, the harmonic synergy is exceptional. They are the only Adelaide band regularly featuring twin-fiddle and twin mandolin instrumental numbers, acknowledging the traditional old-time country music that pre-dated bluegrass.
Bluegrass Junction are bluegrass veterans. They know where the genre comes from. They respect what makes it work. They play with passion because they love it, which is clearly evident on stage, ensuring a good time for all.
