From Bidyadanga in WA’s remote Kimberley country, where the desert meets the sea, John Bennett has emerged as a singer/songwriter with an astounding ability to transport listeners to his home country and transcend cultural barriers. His self titled debut album, sung in English with references to his native language of Karijarri, established a name as the “Voice of the Kimberley” representing the remote lands of his people, culture and his community.
John met Fremantle based musician, composer and singer-songwriter David Hyams in the recording studio when he was booked as a session musician for John’s album, and the 2 have been performing ever since at festivals -including the opening concert of the Melbourne festival in 2014, sharing the stage with Emma Donovan, Harry Hookey and Lucky Oceans.
John’s songs offer a unique insight into his world: a journey into the remote and beautiful North-West of Australia - songs full of yearning, to be home with his people and celebrations of the important people in his life.
John’s festival concert will also feature songs from second album “Country is Calling”, produced by David and featuring the cream of WA musicians including Grammy award winner Lucky Oceans, due for release in September 2017.
